Course Duration:

30+ Hours (25 Lessons)

Instructor:

Shaykh Fahd ibn `Abd al-Qayyūm ibn al-`Alā’

Overview:

This is an introductory course to the science of Naḥw (Arabic Syntax). In this course, students will go through the famous versification of the prose primer “al-ʼĀjurrūmiyyah,” commonly referred to as “Nadhm ʿUbayd Rabbih” or “Nadhm Ibn Ubba.”

The ʼĀjurrūmiyyah, both in form of prose and poetry, has remained to be one of the standard primers in the discipline of Nahw for centuries, and as such has been the basis and inspiration of countless commentaries and annotations by scholars of Syntax. This particular versification stands out due to the author, Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ubba al-Muzzammirī al-Shanqīṭī (d. 1168), who made the didactic poem concise for the ease of memorization.

Objectives:

This course focuses on three areas:

[1] Fundamentals of Arabic Syntax: Covering the introductory concepts and theories in Arabic Syntax and Grammar, background discussions on the science and application of syntactic rules and terminologies to classical texts. These fundamentals will exceptionally assist students engaging in grammatical analyses and readers of i’rāb-analytic commentaries on the Qur’ān.

[2] Prosodic Breakdown: Deciphering the text in light of the rules of Arabic prosody, effectively assisting students in learning its systematic and syllabically accurate diacritization. A unique experience for students memorizing the text.

[3] Questions and Answers: The instructor addressed questions and queries about the text, the discussions during the lessons, and the science in general. This allowed the students to have an interactive and thought-provoking learning experience.

Prerequisites:

This is a Level 1 Course that requires a Late Beginner to Intermediate understanding of Arabic Syntax, basic exposure to reading Arabic texts and poetry, and traditional teaching methodologies.
