Instructor:
Shaykh Fahd ibn ʿAbd al-Qayyūm ibn al-ʿAlā
Overview:
This course is meant to serve as in introduction to the science of Ḥadīth [a narration or tradition of the Prophet ﷺ]. The collection that will be used is the Compilation of Forty Narrations [Arbaʿūn] of al-Mullā ʿAlī al-Qārī (d. 1014). al-Qārī masterfully included narrations which are short in words, yet vast in meaning. As such, the collection is an excellent introduction to the science of Hadith. Students can expect a thorough linguistic breakdown of the narrations, along with discussions that will arise from the meanings of the narrations.
Objectives:
This course will focus on four areas:
[1] Translation: The narrations [aḥadīth] will be translated and rendered into English for the students to grant them an clearer understanding of the speech in and of itself.
[2] Linguistics: Proficient Morphological, Grammatical (Syntactical) and Philological and Rhetorical breakdowns will be covered to provide late-beginner to early-intermediate students a greater scope of the text, and allow them to accurately decipher it in line with the rules of the Arabic sciences. For early-beginners, this will be a unique opportunity to be introduced to the layers of meaningful discussions they can delve into as they progress in their pursue of sacred knowledge.
[3] Authenticity: The documentation [takhrīj] of the narrations and tracing them back to the primary works and compilations of ḥadīth scholars will be given for students to discuss and understand the authenticity of the transmitted narrations and the veracity of the words being attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.
[4] Commentary: The instructor will provide a lucid and engaging -yet comprehendible for beginners- commentary on the narrations by bringing forth various beneficial points, backed by derivations based on the theological, jurisprudential, rational and linguistic sciences.
